WPFC kept a clean sheet at home in route to its 2-0 win over Real Colorado. WPFC, struggling for consistency this season, started with 4 in the back and played inspired soccer from the opening whistle. The home side troubled Real's goalkeeper a few times in the first 40 minutes. Brenden Cohen lofted a chip just high and wide from the left side, Gabriele Zacaggnini hit the post shortly thereafter and narrowly missed another chance late in the half. By the time the whistle sounded at the end of the opening 45 minutes, WPFC left the field with mixed emotions: grateful for not conceding a goal, but realizing that they could have been out front by two.
Real stepped up the pressure in the 2nd half, but everything sent toward goal was either scrambled away or captured by an impressive Bryce Leach. Real's pressure seemed to spark the home side. WPFC remained patient on the attack and achieved the breakthrough as Devin Thomas from just inside the area controlled a ricochet off the crossbar and slotted it behind the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net.
WPFC wrapped up the priceless victory with 10 minutes remaining when Dalen Leverenz met Dylan Gaydosh's inviting cross with a bullet header to put his side 2 goals to the good. WPFC continued to defend well, and as the clock ran down, there was no way back for Real. WPFC's next Academy home game will be February 24th when they host San Diego's Nomads at the WPFC Complex.
