Imagine the aching muscles and racing hearts of 16 girls Sunday afternoon as they watched their keeper Kristina Nelson step to the penalty spot. Fact is they need not have worried. In a moment that defines their season to date, Kristina calmly drilled her ninth round attempt against the South Hill Revolution sending 16 girls and the GU-16 ECNL team crashing down on her. As one parent said after, “these are the moments you play for, seeing the team so excited and the older girls celebrating along with them is what WPFC is all about!"
The tournament may have been decided on that one kick, but that’s not the only story. They defeated the same South Hill team 1-0 in a first round match which saw them play the final 20 minutes with 10 after a red card. They came back bright and early Saturday to win matches over Crossfire and Eastside, both by scores of 1-0. Sunday they scored three quick goals in a 3-1 win over FPFC setting up the thrilling final.
